Mogwai - Burning

Sorti le 24 août, le dernier cd de Mogwai s'intitule  Special Moves et nous offre l'enregistrement live de onze titres retraçant l'itiniraire de ce célèbre groupe de post-rock originaire de Glasgow. Adoubé du DVD Burning, c'est une attention toute particulière qui sera donnée à celui-ci tant l'image renforce ici le son déjà ample caractérisdant l'oeuvre de Mogwai. Réalisé par Vincent Moon et Nathanaël Le Scouanec, connus pour leur collaboration avec la Blogothèque, le film sous forme de documentaire retranscrit l'atmosphère forcément condensée des trois concerts donnés par Mogwai en avril 2009 au Music Hall of Williamsburg à Brooklyn, chaque titre étant entrecoupé d'une carte postale visuelle. 

 

Point de discours, point d'auto-proclamation, seule une réalisation aussi dense que simple permet à la musique de Mogwai, si cela était encore possible, de prendre un relief inattendu.

Sonic Youth - Sensational Fix

The iconic postpunk band Sonic Youth is famed for blurring musical genres, veering from thundering rock to dismantled experimentalism, and expanding the possibilities of the electric guitar. "What we're doing is always inventing itself. I have no terminology for it," guitarist Thurston Moore observes. Moore and his bandmates Kim Gordon, Lee Ranaldo and Steve Shelley have also, over the course of 27 years since they first started playing together, more quietly engaged in multidisciplinary solo efforts and collaborations with visual artists, filmmakers, designers and other musicians. Numerous artists, from Richard Prince and Raymond Pettibon to Gerhard Richter have contributed artwork for Sonic Youth album covers, and Moore, Ranaldo and Gordon in particular have collaborated with visual artists; but the group has also produced a large amount of great ephemera over the decades. 

This comprehensive 784-page volume --which includes two 7-inch records with unpublished songs by each member, album covers, band portraits and documentary photos, many of which have never been published before-- is a must for fans and anyone wanting to connect the dots between New York's various scenes. It features writings by band members and contributions by a host of other luminaries, including Richard Hell, Mike Kelley, Jutta Koether, Alan Licht, Lydia Lunch and John Miller.

Siskiyou - Siskiyou

The debut album by Siskiyou is hitting the streets this week (13 September in Europe, 7 September everywhere else). Siskiyou is the new group led by former Great Lake Swimmers member Colin Huebert in collaboration with Erik Arnesen (who still plays with the Swimmers). The group is based in Vancouver, Canada where Huebert has recently settled after a stint working on an organic farm following his departure from the Swimmers. This is their eponymous debut album.

Banjo, piano, accordion and electric guitar play the lead roles with Siskiyou. The result is an amazing collection of songs thrums with a scrupulous lo-fi backwoods energy and restraint. The music has been described as perfectly conjuring the lush, crisp yet often chilly landscape of the Pacific Northwest.  Siskiyou by Siskiyou is a great album you can listen here.

Prima nieuws voor de liefhebbers van J. Tillman en folk muziek: de getalenteerde folky singer-songwriter, ook uit Seattle en drummer bij Fleet Foxes, llevert ons  zijn al zevende plaat getitled Singing Ax. Opgenomen in 3 dagen van februari door Steve Albini,  het stelt voor eleven verfijnde en eenvoundige liedjes met een minimaal, en zelfs minimalistische, instrumentatie.  Singing Ax klinkt meer als zijn eerste albums I Will Return en Long May You Run, Jay Tillman.

Een lofwardig uitnodiging tot meditatie en rust.

Damien Jurado & Richard Swift – Other People’s Songs, Vol. 1

"These recordings came about spontaneously, and we wanted to share them in the same manner...". Quelques semaines à peine après la sortie de Saint Bartlett, dernier album en date de Damien Jurado et fruit de la collaboration avec Richard Swift, le nouveau duo de la folk psyché publie Other People’s Songs. Comme son nom l'indique, il s'agit de reprises, enregistrées l'espace d'un week-end, d'artistes aussi divers que Bill Fray, Yes, John Denver, Chubby Checker, The Fleetwoods, Kraftwerk. 

Les sonorités renvoient à la pop psychédélique des sixties chères au sieur Swift. Le résultat est assez convaincant avec un sommet: l'improbable mais génial cover de Radioactivity de Kraftwerk.

Et le meilleur dans tout ça? C'est disponible à l'écoute et au téléchargement sur Soundcloud et un Other People’s Songs, Vol. 2 est déjà annoncé pour l'hiver 2011.

Dolorean made available on his blog for listening & download his cover of Damien Jurado's Ghost Of David : simply brilliant.

In the Fall of 2005 Damien Jurado and Dolorean toured Europe for what seemed like forever.  In conjunction, Jurado’s long-time label Secretly Canadian issued this tour only split 7 inch that quickly went out of print. Jurado tackles “Traded For Fire” from Dolorean's Not Exotic with the help of Rosie Thomas and Eric Fisher. Dolorean wrecks shop on the title track of 2000’s Ghost of David. Emil Amos does all the lead guitar work here – taking Jurado’s beautiful lo-fi mess and stretching it into infinity.
